Ugis Magonis, Latvian Railway

I welcome the participants in the Third International Regional Rail Business Forum Strategic Partnership 1520: Baltic Region.

The indisputable advantages of the 1520 area countries include common technological standards, historically established long-term business links, a common information space, and a unique geographical and economic situation in terms of their vast transit potential. For the major world producers of railway equipment and technologies, the growing 1520 area market is becoming more and more attractive and this, of course, opens up new opportunities for international cooperation.

Owing to its geographical position, the Baltic region is an important link between Russia and the European Union countries. It is becoming increasingly obvious that the future of the growth of railway transport lies in development of a system of railway transport corridors, interaction and cooperation between the railway administrations of the wide and narrow gauge countries and concerted development of international transport networks.

The issues proposed for discussion at the Third International Regional Rail Business Forum Strategic Partnership 1520: Baltic Region are of interest to all participants in the transport process in the Pan-European space and are called upon to generate further plans for developing the region’s transport infrastructure.

I am confident that the results of the forum will make a real contribution to developing interaction among all the participants in the transportation process.

President Latvian Railway  Ugis Magonis
