Latvian Railway

Since 2007 the state company Latvian Railway (LDz), which was founded in 1919, functions as the Group, managed by the holding company SJSC Latvijas dzelzceļš. The Group consists of five subsidiaries that are responsible for such spheres of activity of railway transport as freight and international passenger carriages, construction and maintenance of infrastructure, repairs and maintenance of rolling stock, objects and freight security, allocation of railway infrastructure capacity, and determination of charges for its use.

In 2010, LDz was ranked the third valuable company in the country. As regards freight traffic volumes per total track length, LDz is considered one of the most efficient railways in Europe.

The subsidiary of SJSC Latvijas dzelzceļš – LDZ CARGO Ltd – is the fifth largest railway freight operator in the European Union and the largest in the Baltic States. The company transports freight in the transit corridors East-West and North-South, operating in two legal environments — SMGS and CIM, as well as provides freight forwarding and logistics services.

Due to successful development strategies of the company and promotion of international cooperation, the consequences of the global economic crisis were minimized: compared to the record in 2008 when freight turnover of Latvian Railway reached 56 million tons, in subsequent years there was only a small drop - to 49.1 million tons in 2010. Given the growing interest in freight transport, LDz plans in future to increase throughput capacity of the East-West transit corridor up to 85 million tons of freight per year and ensure the quality of railway infrastructure services in accordance with the requirements of operators through the implementation of several projects to modernize infrastructure.

The key strategic partners of LDz still remain Russia (Russian freight makes up 67% of total freight turnover by the Group), Belarus, Kazakhstan and other countries of 1520 mm railway network.

DEVK

DEVK was founded in 1886 as a self-help institution for rail workers under the name of ‘Burial funds for officials and employees in the districts of the Royal Railway Administration of Wroclaw’. Since then, DEVK has developed into a modern, high-quality insurance Group. A significant milestone in the history of the company was the admission of private clients in the 1970s. With this, the foundations for further growth were laid. Of course, the company has always adapted to new market conditions. Nevertheless, a series of fundamental principles have remained an inherent part of DEVK. These include the legal status of the two parent companies as a mutual insurance association, and in particular the pledge to offer cost-effective insurance with fair conditions. This means: DEVK members are simultaneously shareholders. This has many advantages. DEVK does not have to consider third-party investors and members can even benefit from refunds of any premiums that were not required. Therefore DEVK offers German railway union EVG members special discounts. Under the umbrella of the two parent associations, specialised entities work in various insurance areas to ensure flexibility, client orientation and efficiency. Throughout Germany, some 1,200 branches ensure that the distance to DEVK is as short as possible for all existing and potential clients. Around 2,250 full-time and 4,000 part-time agents are on hand to deal with the requests, concerns and needs of members and clients. Today, some four million customers with 13.4 million exposures across all sectors rely on DEVK. Based on the number of contracts, DEVK is Germany’s fourth-largest contents insurer and the country’s fifth-largest for vehicle and sixth largest for liability insurance.
